E3 2011: Konami pre-E3 Conference

This pre-E3 press conference was pre-recorded and could even be downloaded from Gametrailers just a few minutes after it started.

We are told that this year is the 30th Anniversary of Frogger and the 25th Anniversary of Castlevania. We should expect more DLC for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Frogger will be getting a new game on the 3DS later this year.

We see the Creative Producer for Metal Gear Solid 3DS, Yoshikazu Matsuhana and he tells a bit about him, his history with the MGS series, and explains that one reason for making MGS 3DS was to test the limits of the hardware itself. At the end of this section we are shown a trailer for MGS 3DS.

We now see the Creative Producer for Pro Evolution Soccer 2012, he talks a bit about PES, what they did in PES2011 and what they are concentrating on in PES 2012 (such as off the ball control and making the game more realistic) and we end with a PES 2012 trailer

We are now shown Oxford, England where we see  the producer of Konamis new IP, Never Dead. He goes onto talk about the new features in Never Dead saying perhaps the most unique feature in Never Dead is that the main character is immortal. Even if he loses his arms and legs, he can come back. He said it all started with him wanting a character who no matter what the circumstances can never die.

The story starts with a lead character called Brice, 500 years ago he was originally a heroic demon hunter who challenges the demon king and unfortunately loses. His wife who was with him gets murdered. He says again that the most unique feature that you won’t find in any other game is that the character is immortal.

Even if he loses his head or his legs and arms, he’ll get his limbs and put them back on. This is a third person action shooter. He talks about how they made this game a little and says his main goal is for the player to experience something completely new. He says while people may be familiar with action games, he thinks with the main character being immortal, that is the key to a completely new game playing experience. And finally we see a trailer for this new game with music by Megadeath.
Next up, we see one of the producers of the Silent Hill series who has worked on the series for 5 years. He is on the setting for the new Silent Hill Movie, Silent Hill Revelations. We see someone who is working on the new movie, invited to see the new game at Konami studios and asked for his input on it. A bit of discussion on the movie and how it draws on the games.

We now get told that there will be a Silent Hill Collections which is Silent Hill 2 and 3 retouched in HD and later down the road, they will release Silent Hill: Book of Memories for the NGP. We now see a new trailer for Silent Hill: Downpour, the latest entry in the Silent Hill series.

We are now shown the outsides of Kojima Producers with someone from Konami, Mark MacDonald. He takes us into the building and to where Hideo is (this is done in a drawn out but comical way with Hideos dub sounding absolutely hilarious). When all this is done, we are in Hideos office area. We are now shown a rather long drawn out trailer with Mega 64 people (yes I’m serious) which announces something called Transfarring which allows you to  bring your saves from your PS3 to PSP starting with… Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker which is coming to PS3.

And MGS: Peace Walker is coming to the PS3 in the form of the Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection which also includes Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Peace Walker. That’s not all though, they also announce in this same trailer, Zone of the Enders: HD Collection. Oh and these HD Collections will also come to the 360.

Hideo loves Mega 64 which is why he chose them to do this. We are shown how this Transfarring system works using MGS: Peacewalker. We are told that these HD Collections are not running on an emulator and that they were optimized and rebuilt specifically for PS3 and 360 and that the new UI, redrawn high-rez 2D art, effects and fonts and a host of other stuff were made specifically for this HD Edition.

He explains his idea for the concept of Transfarring and imagines this is only the first step of his idea. Step 1 is the PS3 to PSP save transferring, Step 2 is to bring PS2 class games to PS3 and NGP and Step 3 is to work it so PS3 class games can use save transfarring from day 1 between the PS3 and NGP.

The MGS: HD Collection will be released in November 2011 and Zone of the Enders: HD Collection will be released next year.

We are told MGS: Rising won’t have anything announced at this E3 and they are targeting to release MGS: Rising in 2012 as originally planned. The Art Director for Rising briefly explains why he took the art in the direction he took it and explains how far they are into the art process, saying that it is mostly complete but they have one thing left to do.

We are finally shown the new Next Generation engine for Hideos next game. It is called the Fox engine, a Kojima production original engine which is being made to be multi-platform for next generation consoles in hopes of making games with shorter development time. Engine was being made shortly after MGS4 was completed and Hideo hopes it will be the best engine in the world. We are briefly shown the engine in action with placeholder assets.

Finally Hideo tells us this year will be a year of preparations for Kojima Productions and he says he will be at E3 next year.
