Enter the Gamer: Pokemon Black/White demo and Hands on with the Nintendo 3DS

Today I went to a Pokemon event over in GAME at Glasgow Fort. They had an event to get Celebi and while I was there I got to try out the Nintendo 3DS because the Pokemon stuff was delayed, as they were still waiting for it to be delivered. After I got Celebi, I was then able to try out a short 5 minute demo of Pokemon Black and White.

The Pokemon Black and White demo was like a combination of the two games combined into one demo, I was able to try it several times while I was there.

The first time, the game said it was winter and I was put into the female characters shoes in the middle of a conversation. I finished the conversation and then went up and saw Bianca who I faced, I sent out Tepig and she sent out Snivy. I also had different Pokemon with me although I forget what it was but I ended up beating Snivy pretty easily.

I proceeded up and faced the other rival (who I forget his name), it started off with Tepig vs Oshawott. I beat Oshawott and another Pokemon that he sent out pretty easily. The levels were pretty high compared to the people who I faced. After that I went up to Dragonspiral Tower and saw Professor Juniper who commented on the tower having a legendary in it.

After that, the demo ended with the face of the Legendary Pokemon in Black (the one on the front of the case). I did the demo again and it started off in Spring instead of Winter but after I got into the first battle, it crashed and I had to reset the DS.

Next time I started the demo it said Summer and instead of Tepig, I had Snivy. Once I got to the end, I saw the other legendary which I didn’t see last time.

All in all, I came away with a pretty positive impression of the game, the new battle animations look pretty nice and the graphics look better although we never got to see the big city with the tall buildings but the graphical upgrade still makes it look where I was in the demo.

I also wasn’t crazy about the designs of the new Pokemon but in-game, they actually look pretty nice. The menu in the demo however was disabled so I had to see what Pokemon I had on me while in battle. Apart from that, my only complaint is that the demo was so short but it’s obviously done so people don’t have to wait long to play it.

Now as for the Nintendo 3DS, I got to play it because the lady who was dealing with the people coming in wondering about the Celebi event had the 3DS out for people who were waiting about or who just wanted to try it since they came all the way there.

It was the Aqua Blue 3DS and unfortunately I didn’t get to play a 3DS game but I did get to check out the camera including taking a 3D picture and it looked pretty nice. The 3D works pretty well and I even got to try out the 3D slider, you can really tell when it goes from 3D to normal and back.

I also got to try out New Super Mario Bros DS on the 3DS and although it wasn’t in 3D, I got to try out the new analogue stick and it feels pretty natural and not at all awkward like I thought it would be.

All in all, I came away with a pretty positive impression of both the Nintendo 3DS and the Pokemon Black and White demo.
