The 5th Quarter: FINALLY

Preseason has officially started! What fun, after 2 months of NOTHING. I relise it’s been a month since I last wrote, so what I’ll do today is catch up with the big news of the past month, then preview the Hall of Fame Game later in the week. Probably Saturday. Anyway, let’s get stuck in…

Well, might as well start with transfers. Terrell Owens has finally found a job for this season, hooking up with Chad Ochocinco in Cincinnatti. Just in time for Training camp. About a week in, everything seems to be going smoothly between the two most outspoken recievers in the NFL, but in this blogger’s opinion, 81/85 is an implosion waiting to happen.

BOOOM!!! Wait, do implosions go boom?

Having said all that, they are good friends off-field…for now. I just wonder if that’ll be the same once the ‘who’s the No.1 reciever’ conversation comes around….

Right, in other news, BRETT FAVRE. I’ve figured out his game. He just doesn’t want to do Training Camp. Which is fair enough, I wouldn’t want to do Training Camp if I was nearly 41 and had a dodgy ankle. He’s said his ankle, which he injured near the end of last year’s NFC championship, hasn’t improved after surgery in May. It sounds to me like he NEEDS Training Camp, to work on that ankle and see if he can play effectively. Whatever happens, we know he plans to stay with the Vikings if he’s healthy, as his wife has renewed her membership at a Minnesota gym.

According to Google, the 5th most valid image result for 'Favre ankle'. THERE IS NO ESCAPE

Now we know this is a successful blog. There’s a running joke…

Speaking of running jokes, Albert Haynesworth. *cue canned laughter* Seriously, the guy was a stud DT with the Titans, then moved to the Redskins, got paid, and hasn’t done shit since. After a remarkably average last season, he has failed his pre-training camp conditioning test 3 times. THREE. This is the man who got a $100 million, 7 year contract last offseason. This just goes to prove it, don’t give your players crazy, front-loaded contracts, or they won’t put any effort in.

Look at him. He's not bothered.

In a neat segue, one of the best CB ‘s in the league, Darrelle Revis, is holding out from Jets Training Camp in a contract dispute. Revis has 3 years remaining on his rookie contract, which would pay him $1 million next year, making him the 6th highest earning DB on the Jets. In addition, by holding out he has lost a potential $20 million end of contract payment. It is likely that Revis is looking to be the highest paid CB in the league over Nnamdi Asomugha of the Raiders, who signed a 3-year, $45 million contract with the Oakland team last season. The Jets are looking to extend the contract of 4 major players this offseason, with only one, LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson, agreeing to the terms offered by the Jets.

In other big money moves, the No.1 pick in the draft, QB Sam Bradford  has signed a 6 year, $78 million contract with the Rams, with $50 million of that guaranteed. This is the largest rookie contract ever signed, although reports that No.2 pick Ndamukong Suh wants an even larger contract from the Lions may make this record short lived.

He's a happy chappy.

Well, those are the bigger stories of the recent weeks. From now on, I’ll be updating much more regularly, so I’ll be able to keep you all up to date on the little things as well. Hall of Fame Game this Weekend! I’ll see you then.

EDIT: You know what’s hilarious? The fact I spent about quarter of an hour writing about why Brett Favre will return, coupled with the fact he announced he’s retiring while I was doing it. Some people have no manners.

EDIT EDIT: OK, now he’s come out and practised with a High School team in Mississippi, and is refusing to say whether he’s retired or not. In addition, the Vikings have allegedy offered him more money to return. You see why all sportswriters secretly hate Brett Favre? You write one thing about him, and 5 minutes later it’s out of date. Due to the lack of a sufficient picture of a confused Favre, I will have to make do with one of Phillip Rivers.
