Firstly, I’m feeling slightly numb. The end of Lost is here! The actual ending… as in there will be no more new episodes after Sunday… ever. That’s just crazy. The show that felt like it’d never end is coming to a close. There’s a lot of expectations from a lot of fans (well the ones that didn’t give up in Season 2 anyway) and this finale is going to have to be AMAZING to really satisfy the cult following. Don’t worry too much about the saturation my posts are seeing on the front page compared to everyone else right now; once The End has passed and I’ve blogged my thoughts on it, I’ll calm down a bit, mainly because I’ll have nothing else to write about…
So, here’s my list of things we need to see in that final episode:
End it in style!
What I mean here is the final scene has to be very cool; it has to reflect on everything we’ve seen over the last six years and my personal view is that it has to leave us in no doubt as to how things have finished up. No more ambiguity please, just tell us how it is J
There’s a few different theories as to how it will end, and the one I personally lean towards is a mirroring of the Jacob/MIB scene from the beginning of the S5 finale only with Jack and Flocke sitting on the beach professing hatred instead. It does bother me that it seems a tad obvious, hence the amount of people saying that’s how it’ll end and I’m not too sure if I’d be satisfied with it, it would be a fantastic reflection of the journey the two most important survivors went on, Jack going from being the man of science to being the man of faith and Locke vice versa.
I don’t really want any of the theories floating around to be the actual ending, I want to see the entire final episode take an entirely different course than any of us could’ve predicted, by 7:30am on Monday morning I want to be sitting completely stunned, unable to move from the sofa, eyes slowly drying up due to paralysed eyelids. The amount of normal episodes that have left me thinking for another solid 20 minutes afterwards have to culminate in this finale. It’s a hell of a lot of pressure.
Richard must die!
While it is blatantly predictable, this is the only logical ending to Mr. Alpert’s story, this is the one place in the finale where I want the writers to do what everybody thinks they will. I swear to God if he died when MIB flung him across the barracks last episode then I’ll be severely pissed, not that I think he could have died from that but who knows? Perhaps Jacob’s final hours on the island weakened the effect of Richard’s immortality spell, this could be the reason he’s finally able to end his life.
Richard’s death should be the only one of (hopefully) many in the finale that we will actually be happy for, not because he’s a terrible character (ala the community wide applause when Zoe’s throat opened up last episode) but because he’s a great character receiving the release he’s wanted since before even Widmore first rocked up on the shores. I want to be choking up at Richard’s death, as do the rest of the fans, surely that’ll be like shooting fish in a barrel…
Jack and Locke faceoffs!
We all love these moments and they’ve been coming at us thick and fast since Hurley’s crew arrived at Flocke’s camp. Both in the normal and sideways timelines we need to see the two sides of Lost’s coin staring eachother down for the final few times in the finale, perhaps even a spot of fisticuffs might be nice
I can see an awesome confrontation scene with Jack and his little dream team of Sawyer, Hurley and Kate, arriving to stop whatever it is that Flocke’s going to do to destroy the island. Flocke standing there with Ben and Claire his wingmen, facing down Jack’s team, the feeling of conclusion and THE FINAL SHOWDOWN lingering in the air. I can’t f***ing wait!
Henry Gale’s Redemption
All Ben’s done in our normal timeline throughout the 4.5 seasons we’ve known him is manipulate, meddle and screw people over. He’s a stone cold killer and creator of some of the worst moments for our main characters and his character needs that redeeming moment, the one he’s been building up to since he got himself caught in Rousseau’s trap way back in S2. Ben has to go down, he can’t leave the island, more than any other character he’s been the island’s captive throughout, he’s got to go out in a blaze of glory, a huge moment of payback for all the crappy things he’s done. This is a moment I can’t wait for, not because I hate Ben, I don’t, he’s one of the best characters in the show, but because its going to be one of the defining moments of the finale. Similarly to Richard’s death, surely they can’t mess this up?
The sideways-timeline round up
I was in the camp early on in this season that didn’t really like the sideways timeline. I thought it took too much away from the on-island stuff, the real ending to the show, the answers we were promised and the characters’ final stories. And I still stick to that, for the first 6 or so episodes of S6 the sideways stuff was dire, populated by stories like the one about Kate doing the same thing she’s done in her flashbacks/forwards for the entire show, they seemed like a terrible waste of time. BUT since Desmond’s eyes were opened its been fantastic, why they didn’t do this earlier I can’t fathom, Desmond running around being the all-knowing puppet-master of our ignorant heroes has been great, I really can’t wait to see how its all going to collide with the on-island stuff, in fact I think this may be my most anticipated part of the finale. That’s really testament to the talent of the people behind this show, they introduce an entirely new aspect to the show for one season and by the end of said season its my favourite part of the show. To do this on a show like Lost where people are very set in their ways and really just want things to play out the way they think they will is an amazing achievement. Go Team Desmond!
While I haven’t touched on absolutely everything I could talk about here, I don’t want to take up the entire front page with my inane Lost ramblings, all that remains to say is that its been one hell of a ride, one that will stick in my memory for the rest of my life. Its had ups and downs and some pretty bad episodes alongside the truly amazing stuff (The Constant immediately springs to mind) but its never made me want to stop watching. It may not be the best TV show ever but I’ve never anticipated a finale quite this much. Here’s hoping they send the most important show of our generation off in style! I’ve got faith…
P.S. – If they try to pull anything like these Ridiculous Flashbacks, I may well have to save up, fly to California, locate Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof and smash their heads together
That’ll be all.
P.P.S. – I hope I’m not the only one that’s hoping to see Rose and Bernard pop up somewhere, even if its only in the flash-sideways, we need to see a final glimpse of Vincent too!
