Views from a Ranting Limey: Weeds – Thwack!

Hi, its been a while. My last post was on the 7th of June, so yeah, a bit of a hiatus. I’m back now and should be in full force thanks to the fall season’s impending onslaught of new and returning shows. First on the agenda is Weeds, which had its season six premiere on Tuesday evening in the US of A. I’m aware that Weeds isn’t a show watched by many in UK, but never fear I’ll be getting back into Dexter and Sons of Anarchy next month and telling you about any new shows worth picking up.

So, a little synopsis to get us started, no? We pick up the story straight after Shane’s sudden murder of last season’s “big bad”, Pilar. As she lies bleeding out in her own pool, Nancy grabs her sons, a few dozen bags of shoes and her newborn son and high tails it out of Esteban’s mansion. They head back to Renmar, supposedly to pick up keys for a bigger van but we all really know it was to pick up Andy (as much from Nancy’s perspective as the writers’). Andy newly bachelored and sporting a fresh black eye the family is reuinited and on the run for the second time. Mostly set-up then.

First thoughts upon finishing the episode: A – the story was about as strong as the entirity of last season (not great) but B – the jokes and humour were definitely improved. Shane as the badass mallet killer was great as were Silas and Andy’s reactions. I accept that the story was never going to be great for the first episode, the only goal being to set up the rest of the season. And there’s certainly potential, being on the run indefinitely is new territory and Shane’s new persona should provide some fun.

Just a short post this, mainly due to the fact that Thwack was 99% set-up for the rest of the season so there’s not really a lot to say. It really shouldn’t be too difficult to improve on the last lacklustre season and if this episodes one-liners are to be trusted, we could be in for a funny ride. Let’s hope they make this the last season though, eh?
